Canon AE1 + Kodak Ektrachrome Professional Infrared EIR Film
Exposures made on color infrared film were always a joyful surprise.
Unlike traditional film, there was no formula. No sunlight to measure. Infrared light is invisible. Your charge was to load film, cross fingers, throw caution, hold breath and fire. Drop at the lab, and then summon the processing gods. As a lifelong Square, a rule-follower to the bone, this untethered process was surely a test. But, an irresistible one to me. Bursting with imagination and possibility.
It made me break rules.
Bend, reach.
Expand.
It helped me find my point of view as an artist.
That is why these pink palm trees have been my calling card for so many years:
profile photos, thumbnails, banners. In my personal profiles and as a studio consultant.
Why they hang above my desk in my studio now. They remind me to stay open to all that I don’t know.
To breathe deep, pinch my nose and take a leap every now and then.
You never know what wonder awaits.
Say Hello.
